STRANGE OBSCURA
Tintype photography sessions are unlike any photograph you have ever had taken! Tintypes are a piece of living history that you get to participate in. I will guide you through the entire process, from preparing the plate to creating your final image. There is space to experiment, adjust, and even reshoot if needed. The unpredictability is part of what makes each plate so special.
I am based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, working out of a completely portable darkroom set-up. This allows me to offer on-location Tintype Sessions for portraits, couples, and any unique ideas you may want to bring to life in the Milwaukee Area! I am also available for travel as needed. A tintype, also known as the wet plate collodion process, is a photographic method dating back to 1851, invented by Frederick Scott Archer.
Each image begins as a hand-poured plate. A thin sheet of metal is coated in collodion, sensitized in silver nitrate, and exposed while still wet. The entire process happens in real time, requiring precision, patience, and presence.
Because of this, every tintype is entirely unique. No negatives, no duplicates. Just a singular object, created by hand, carrying a depth and permanence that modern photography cannot replicate.

For a 4×5 tintype, I recommend up to two people.
For a 5×7 tintype, No more than four people work best. Tintypes rely heavily on precise lighting and focus, so keeping the group size smaller helps ensure everyone is clearly visible
-
These refer to the physical size of the plate itself.
Tintypes can be created in a range of sizes. Larger plates require more materials, time, and care, which is reflected in their cost. Each size offers a different presence, from something intimate and personal to something more striking and statement-making.
